WH Presser: Trump plans to ban flavored vapes; no mention of THC or smoking
Sitting between the First Lady and Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar, President Trump announced today that his administration is interested in banning flavored vaping products. “We are going to have to do something about it," he said, while describing vaping as “a new problem in the country” that needs to be addressed.
The White House press conference veered into many different directions. Regarding vaping, Trump at first sounded almost impressed by a newly emerging industry’s ability to become so profitable in such a short amount of time. However, he also took aim at his predecessor, President Barrack Obama, for allowing flavored vaping products on the market without proper government oversight. Mr. Trump also referenced the First Lady’s concerns which Ms. Melania made known in a September 9 tweet.
“I am deeply concerned about the growing epidemic of e-cigarette use in our children. We need to do all we can to protect the public from tobacco-related disease and death, and prevent e-cigarettes from becoming an on-ramp to nicotine addiction for a generation of youth.”
Mr. Trump also referenced the recent surge in mysterious lung disorders being reported around the country and his concerns over additional reports of at least five deaths being allegedly vaping-linked. The trouble is that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have already identified the most likely source of these strange ailments as the vaping of THC-enhanced substances.
Yet nowhere in Trump’s press conference were the words THC, marijuana, or cannabis ever mentioned. He also failed to mention anything about vaping being 95 percent less toxic than smoking…or the millions of already documented smoking-related deaths that occur around the world annually.
The President and First Lady are being fed lies and false information
The link connecting the deaths to THC is further supported by at least two state public health agencies, those of California and New York. Yet even in the light of these newly emerging scientific studies, the grossly misinformed Secretary Azar issued the following statements during the press conference.
“The Trump Administration is making it clear that we intend to clear the market of flavored e-cigarettes to reverse the deeply concerning epidemic of youth e-cigarette use that is impacting children, families, schools and communities. We will not stand idly by as these products become an on-ramp to combustible cigarettes or nicotine addiction for a generation of youth.”
Clearly, the President is being fed lies and false information. Even his former FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb stated during a recent interview on CNBC’s Squawk Box, “It doesn’t look like these are legitimately legally sold vapes that contain nicotine products that are sold by the big brands.”
