4 fun reasons to switch to vaping as your new year’s resolution

As the clock winds down on 2018, many Americans are planning to quit smoking as their new year’s resolution.  Most have tried to quit unsuccessfully in the past, but let’s be honest.  Quitting smoking the old-fashioned way through the cold turkey method is excruciating and rarely works long-term.

We get moody and irritable.  We also have the tendency to overcompensate by eating around the clock as a substitution for smoking.  Before you know it, we’ve alienated our friends, family members, and coworkers with our wild mood swings, and our self-esteem begins to suffer as we start packing on the pounds. Within days or maybe weeks, most of us revert back to smoking just to get our lives back on track.

But the desire to quit smoking persists.  So eventually, we might decide to give those nicotine transdermal patches, gums, or lozenges a try.  Unfortunately, most of these outdated smoking cessation systems are promoted by Big Pharma and have proven to be minimally effective.

They are also somewhat expensive, more so than buying a pack of cigarettes.  So, this extra money spent only plays tricks with our minds.  Somehow, we begin to rationalize that we “can’t afford” to quit smoking, and once again we head to the local convenience store for a pack of smokes.  Our self-esteem takes another hit, and the vicious cycle starts all over again.

Is it any wonder that most smokers trying to quit view the entire process as a chore, as something that is going to cause us pain and aggravation?  Luckily, quitting smoking doesn’t have to be a negative experience.

Switching to vaping can actually be a whole lot of fun, and if it’s fun, you’re more likely to be quit permanently without a single relapse.  Here are four fun facts about vaping that all smokers trying to quit should know.

1.  Vaping is almost twice as effective in quitting smoking compared to ‘the patch.”

A 2014 study conducted out of the UK indicates that using vapor technology as a tobacco harm reduction tool improves a smoker’s chances of long-term smoking abstinence by as much as 50 percent compared to other nicotine replacement therapies or NRTs. The scientists attribute this higher rate of success to the simple hand-to-mouth actions and other emotional triggers that both vaping and smoking share.

This form of substitution therapy helps ease the mental stress involved in quitting almost immediately.  Patches and gums do nothing to address these sorts of addictive physical behaviors.  The UK research paper entitled Real-world effectiveness of e-cigarettes when used to aid smoking cessation: a cross-sectional population study is available online via the U.S. National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health (NLM/NIH).

2.  Join some vaping communities and have some fun.

Sure, there are lots of quit smoking communities online to help people cope with the nasty side effects of quitting smoking, but they seldom work and are rarely fun.  Who wants to travel to an online chat group of formers smokers who spout bumper sticker slogans like “fake it ‘till you make it” or “one day at a time?”

Vaping communities, on the other hand, are a whole lot of fun.  Instead of complaining about your lot in life, about the mood swings and irritability that comes with quitting smoking, about the extra weight gain, newbie vapers can ask veterans about more interesting topics.

Learn about which new e-liquids are on the market.  Ask questions about different vape mods and other technology.  You can even learn how to make your own e-liquid to save money, which brings us to another fun reason to switch to vaping.

3.  Vaping is cheaper than smoking.

The average price of a pack of cigarettes is between six and eight dollars, and a pack of smokes only lasts about a day or less for most smokers.  New Yorkers are forced to pay even more, as much as $13 per pack or higher.

Compared to smoking, vaping is dirt cheap.  A bottle of e-liquid can go for about $10 and last for a week or more depending on how much you vape.  Your first vape pen might only cost $20, which means that for the price of a few packs of cigarettes, you’ve already set yourself up for an enjoyable and healthier week of vaping.

And because you are saving so much money, you now get to have the fun experience of experimenting with lots of different e-juice flavors, which brings us to reason #4.

4.  Experimenting with e-liquid flavors is half the fun.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) often criticizes vapor companies for manufacturing and promoting so many different e-liquid flavors.  With names like cotton candy, root beer, and chocolate-covered strawberry, the FDA claims that e-liquid manufacturers are only selling these tasty blends to mischievously attract young teenager consumers.

The truth is, adults like sweeter flavors, too.  And the wide variety of available flavor profiles is what makes switching to vaping so much fun and ultimately successful in helping smokers quit.

Vaping isn’t like smoking.  If a vaper happens to run out of their favorite brand of juice, they tend to view this as an opportunity to try something new and exciting.  Unlike smoking, vaping is never boring.
